Thewa jewellery: Old is gold
The wide range of thewa filigree work in 23 carat gold foil, set against colourful glass base is evoking the same passion among Indian jewellery buyers as a lyrical creation by a poet, those in the business say. "Thewa art serenades the mystical and the modern. It has designs inspired from natural forms like peacock and elephants. These collections are very elegant and feminine", says Sunil K Nair, from a jeweller house selling thewa. With high craftsmanship, the pieces of coloured glass are encased in gold plated silver. Then the delicate designs are worked out on the glass pieces with gold leaf. Apart from pendants, earrings, bracelets, mirrors even small sindoor boxes and jewel cases are made in this fashion, he says. "Thewa ornaments have not only succeeded in entering the markets but have also turned into a fashion statement,". Sunil says they are constantly working towards keeping the traditional thewa art alive which is very much contemporary as it aims at satisfying the modern woman who likes to wear jewellery and not lock it up in a bank. "Seven or eight years ago nobody talked of thewa jewellery but now we even get export orders from countries like USA, UK and UAE," says Sunil . Thewa art imbibes the bygone era`s heritage but its impulse lies in fulfilling the demands of today`s woman, who believes in mixing and matching jewellery even as she is on the lookout for something different," asserts Kumar. This traditional jewellery has an old world charm and is affordable at the same time. The red, green or blue glass below highlights the intricate gold work in the best possible manner. "Made of multi coloured beads in diverse colours and designs, this unique jewellery heightens your distinct style," which is now available in our e-shop www.jewelace.com also says Kumar. "The hand made thewa jewellery which ranges from Rs 5000 to Rs 55000 has today fashioned into a `must have` jewellery. "Thewa art is enticing people in all its shine and affordability. Today customers do not look for how many carats gold there is in the jewellery.
